Principal's Corner
Therese Jackson
Dear Parents,
For a couple of years now
we have tried to be very proactive in identifying and
eliminating any bullying type behaviors. One very important step
in doing this is to create a school wide anti-bullying policy.
The diocese is also working on a diocesan policy. Some of the
best ways in which we can create an effective plan is through
information gathering and education. We want to answer questions
like: What is bullying, how do we identify bullying behavior,
how do we create an environment where bullying does not exist or
is easily identified and ratified.
As a proactive stance we
sent three teachers and two parents to recent workshops related
to bully and cyber bullying. We surveyed our school children
with a survey provided by a professional in the field. The
children were free to remain anonymous. Once the survey data has
been analyzed we will share the results with you.
We have a
teacher workday coming up and we will receive the results of the
survey and get guidance from the professionals and we will
construct an anti-bullying plan. Our future plan is to present
educational workshops and to gather feedback from parents as
well. This is just one way in which we are trying to be
proactive.
Each year we are
asked to submit three annual goals to the
diocese based on our School Improvement Plan
(SIP) that was completed in 2006. We recently
shared these goals with the Advisory Board and
would like to share them with you. If you recall
when we completed our SIP in 2006 our two goals
were: To help children learn to reflect on their
work for the purpose of improvement and to help
students take risk in their learning. These
goals are then broken down into measureable
objectives. After reviewing our ITBS scores the
three goals we will work on this year are:
-
At least 80% of our students will
increase their ITBS Math computation skills
by 5%.
-
At least 80% of our students will
increase their ITBS Spelling skills by 5%.
-
Using the Math Minute Program teachers
will help 80% of the students increase their
accuracy and speed by 10 percent over the
school year.
Over the course of the year you will see the
many learning activities your children are being
exposed to in order to achieve these goals.
Prior to school opening our teachers
participated in a two day workshop on our Math
Program in order to help our students reach our
goals.
